Considering Liposuction? Here’s What You Need to Know

Liposuction consistently lands in the top five cosmetic surgery procedures — and for good reason. The procedure has a long history proving it's safe, and in the hands of a skillful plastic surgeon, liposuction does an exceptional job of sculpting your body.

Rafael C. Cabrera, MD, FACS, at Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton combines years of experience performing liposuction with a skilled, artistic eye to craft the body shape you desire and create beautiful results. If you're thinking about liposuction, schedule a consultation so we can answer all of your questions. In the meantime, here's what you should know about liposuction.

Plan on body sculpting, not weight loss

Liposuction does an exceptional job of shaping your body by eliminating nagging areas of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise. However, liposuction is not a weight loss strategy.

You will drop a few pounds of fat, but not enough to make a difference if you still need to lose a significant amount of weight. For this reason, the best candidates for liposuction are already at or near their healthy body weight.

Some patients think we can use liposuction to easily remove all of their excess fat. The procedure is simple enough, requiring small incisions and a slim device that gently suctions out the fat.

But taking away too much fat poses an unacceptable risk. Not to mention that creating beautiful results demands a soft touch that precisely removes small areas of fat.

Reshape nearly any body area

One of the great things about liposuction is that we can use it to remove fat from nearly every part of your body. People frequently come to us with the desire to get rid of the fat in their:

Liposuction is also a potential treatment for men with gynecomastia (enlarged breasts), depending on the extent and type of tissue they need to reduce. Though liposuction doesn't remove enlarged breast tissue, some men may only need to get rid of excess fat to restore their chest profile.

Consider your skin health

If your skin has good tone and elasticity, it will mold to fit your new shape after the fat is gone. It should also appear smooth and tight.

However, if the skin over the pocket of fat is thin or has lost elasticity, we may need to recommend another treatment to deal with loose or dimpling skin. During your consultation, we carefully evaluate all the factors that influence your results. You’ll know about any possible concerns and solutions before you decide to undergo liposuction.

Prepare to stop smoking

It's important to stop using any product that contains nicotine a few weeks before your liposuction. You also need to stay away from the habit while you recover. Nicotine restricts blood flow to your skin, which increases the risk of complications during your procedure and slows down your recovery afterward.

Combine liposuction with liposculpture

Would you like to plump up your lips, hide a facial scar, eliminate deep facial folds, or lift your cheeks? Or maybe you've been thinking about enlarging your breasts. We can do all these procedures using the fat removed during liposuction.

This process, called fat grafting (liposculpture) is safe and produces natural-looking results. We carefully clean the fat removed during liposuction and then inject the fat cells into the areas you want to enhance. As the fat cells take hold and establish a new blood supply, they become living tissues that enhance your appearance.

No need to pack an overnight bag

Although you’re welcome to plan an overnight stay in one of the luxurious rooms in our surgery center, liposuction is usually an outpatient procedure.

We use a specialized local anesthetic process — tumescent anesthesia — that helps remove the fat with ease and contains medication that tightens blood vessels to minimize bleeding. You experience less trauma, you have less post-op pain, and you can get back to your normal activities sooner.

Most people experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated areas, so they take a few days away from work. But you can plan on a full recovery in about two weeks.

Enjoy long-lasting results

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells. That means you can say goodbye to that unwanted and unsightly fat. But be aware that you can still regain weight in the same area.
