Preparing for Eyelid Surgery Recovery
July 15, 2017
The success of eyelid surgery hinges on a good recovery. It is imperative that patients take proper post-op care in order to allow their bodies to heal. If you are interested in removing excess, drooping skin on the eyelids to restore a refreshed and youthful eye appearance, please continue reading to learn tips on how to ensure long-lasting results and a safe recovery.
Rest with Your Head Elevated
Following your surgery, you will return home where you will need to rest with your head elevated. Keeping your head above the level of the rest of your body will minimize swelling and promote faster healing. Place two or three medium size pillows on your bed or couch to prop your head up as you rest.
Use a Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress on the eyes helps minimize pain as the anesthesia begins to wear off. A cold compress also helps reduce swelling and speed up the healing process.
Avoid Eye Strain
For the first few weeks after your surgery, you will need to avoid sunlight as much as you can as well as activities that can expose your eyes to wind, sand, dust and debris. You will also need to minimize your time using your smartphone, computer, television and other digital devices. Keeping your eyes comfortable and getting plenty of rest are important during the first few weeks of recovery, so we recommend enlisting the help of a loved one to help you with daily activities and chores around the house.
Use Prescription Medicine as Directed
Our doctors will prescribe medication for you to take to minimize discomfort after your surgery. Do not take any over-the-counter medicine or painkillers without talking to our team first. It is also a good idea for you to fill and pick up your prescription medicine before your surgery so it is ready for you to use once you get home.
Don’t Skip Follow-up Appointments
The typical initial recovery period for eyelid surgery is one to two weeks. However, our doctors may recommend you take more time off from your normal routine, including work, depending on your personal healing progress. This is why follow-up appointments are important. Our team is committed to ensuring your recovery is a safe and successful one. We will monitor your healing and make suggestions or recommendations to improve your comfort and recovery.
