The Difference between Facelift and Injectables
August 11, 2017
Facelift and cosmetic injectables are two facial rejuvenation treatments with very distinct differences. If you are unsure which cosmetic treatment option can help you restore a youthful appearance the best, the Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton are here to help. Here, our plastic surgeons in Boca Raton discusses the benefits and limitations of each treatment option.
What Facelift Accomplishes
Facelift is considered to be the gold standard in facial rejuvenation. The surgical procedure addresses various signs of aging in the middle and lower areas of the face, including moderate to severe wrinkles, fine lines and creases. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon creates tiny incisions to remove loose skin that has lost its elasticity. By removing the excess skin and tightening and lifting the remaining skin, wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed out, creating a younger-looking appearance. The procedure can also restore a balanced appearance by repositioning fat and tissue that has become displaced over time.
Facelift is performed as an outpatient procedure, typically under general anesthesia. The procedure can take two or more hours to complete, depending on the degree of correction needed. The initial recovery period for facelift can take one to two weeks.
What Cosmetic Injectables Accomplish
Cosmetic injectables are popular because they are a quick and effective non-surgical solution for wrinkles, fine lines and creases in various facial areas, including the forehead, eye area, cheeks, neck and around the mouth. While facelift can treat moderate to severe signs of aging, cosmetic injectables are more appropriate for mild to moderate wrinkles and lines. Cosmetic injectables are also used to restore volume and fullness to facial areas that have become hollow or sunken, including the area under the eyes and cheeks.
Unlike facelift, cosmetic injectables do not address loose, excess skin. Patients with lax facial skin should consider undergoing facelift instead of, or in addition to, cosmetic injectables.
Cosmetic injectables do not require incisions or surgery. Treatment with cosmetic injectables can be completed in about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount used and the number of areas treated. Injectables require very little downtime. Most patients resume their normal activities immediately after their treatment.
How Long Do Results Last?
An expertly performed facelift can last 10 to 15 years. Patients are advised to practice healthy lifestyle habits including wearing sunscreen, not smoking and eating healthy foods to prolong their younger-looking appearance. Depending on the specific product used, results with cosmetic injectables can last anywhere from three months to two years. Patients can prolong their results with repeat treatments.
