Every fall we look forward to updating our wardrobes, but how many of us remember to update our skin care regimen? Some summer skin care practices will simply not do during the cooler, drier autumn weather. Here, the Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton lay out the most common skin care mistakes to avoid this fall, and how to maintain your skin’s natural glow.
Mistake #1: Using Your Summer Moisturizer
Swap your summer moisturizer for a heavier cream or oil-based moisturizer this fall. Lightweight formulas are great for warm, humid months because they help prevent your skin from becoming too oily. A thicker, richer moisturizer formula can give your skin the extra moisture it needs during the fall and winter months.
Mistake #2: Skipping Sunscreen
The sun never rests, even during overcast, cloudy weather. The sun’s rays can penetrate clouds and still reach your skin. Not using sunscreen puts you at risk for sunburns, premature wrinkles and fine lines. Always use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Remember to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.
Mistake #3: Not Hydrating
With the arrival of cool, dry weather, your skin needs every bit of moisture it can get. Water helps your skin release toxins and keeps your skin looking vibrant and luminous. It’s recommended you drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
Mistake #4: Not Exfoliating
The fall season is the perfect time to repair the skin from any summer sun damage it may have endured. Exfoliating removes dead cells from the skin and unclogs pores to keep them looking small and healthy. Use a gentle oil-based scrub once or twice a week to reinvigorate the skin.
Mistake #5: Using Dirty Makeup Brushes
As you exchange your summer shorts for warmer clothes, you may want to swap those summer makeup brushes for new ones. Makeup brushes can trap oils and bacteria, causing skin flare-ups. Wash your makeup brushes with mild soap and water at least once a month.
